WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM?

The Shelter Allowance Program provides financial assistance for low-income households that must spend too much of their budget on rent.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR HELP FROM THE PROGRAM?

  • People aged 53 or over who live alone.
  • Couples in which one partner is aged 53 or over.
  • Families (workers, students, welfare recipients or other low-income families) with at least one dependent child.

The Shelter Allowance Program is aimed at homeowners, tenants, rooming house occupants and anyone sharing a dwelling with one or more other people. To receive the Shelter Allowance, you and your spouse, if you have one, must have produced a tax return for the Québec Government.

YOU DO NOT QUALIFY IF:

  • You live in low-rental housing or in a government-funded health and social services institution;
  • You receive a rent supplement or another direct housing subsidy;
  • You and your spouse, if you have one, possess goods or cash valued at more than $50,000 (excluding the value of your home, land, furniture and car).

WHAT FORM DOES THE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TAKE?

Financial assistance may be up to $80 per month, depending on the number of people in your household, the type of household, your income and your monthly rent. The amount of assistance is calculated annually and is paid to you monthly, by cheque or direct deposit. Assistance may be granted from the month following receipt of your application by Revenu Québec.
